Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Menardo Guevarra said he has ordered an investigation against those who created his fake email account.
“The DOJ Office of Cybercrime is on it,” he said.
“If necessary, I’ll seek help from the NBI,” he added.
The Department of Justice-Office of Cybercrime (DOJ-OOC) warned to public against emails claiming to be from Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra.
In an advisory posted Friday (Aug. 6), the DOJ-OOC Officer-in-Charge Charito Zamora warned the public that “a certain email address namely, osecmig1@gmail, is being utilized by an an unknown subject representing himself as Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra.”
“The said email address was used to send messages to a number of recipients requesting assistance in the alleged procurement of iTunes gift cards as donations to patients at hospice care units across the Philippines, subject to reimbursement,” the DOJ-OOC official said.
With this, she informed the public that “the DOJ Office of the Secretary’s only official email address ios osecmig@gmail.com.”
“Messages coming from a different email address than that of the official one, such as the above-reported, shall be dealt with conscientiously, as these neither originate from this Department, the Office of the Secretary, nor the Justice Secretary,” Zamora said.
Zamora also warned those behind the fraudulent email that what they did is “among the prohibited and punishable acts under Republic Act No. 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
“Any person found guilty of said offense shall be ppunished with imprisonment of prison mayor (six years and one day to twelve years) or a fine of at least Two Hundred Thousand Pesos (Ph200,000.00) up to a maximum amount commensurate to the damage incurred or both,” she cited.
