Rufus Rodriguez seeks passage of bill on early voting for PWDs, seniors before 2022 polls

By Billy Begas

Deputy Speaker and Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez is hopeful that the proposal for early voting of senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) can start in the 2022 elections.

Rodriguez, one of the authors of the measure said the proposal will give affected voters the opportunity to exercise their right of suffrage amid the heath pandemic.

“It would also ease congestion in voting precincts on Election Day, especially at this time of pandemic, and will lessen the possibility of virus transmission,” Rodriguez added.

Rodriguez also pointed out that early voting is already allowed for certain individuals like teachers who serve in the board of election inspectors in polling precincts.

He said the bill will also give the Commission on Elections (Comelec) more time to process ballots.

The House of Representatives has approved the proposal on second reading.

Under House Bill 9562 Comelec will be mandated to schedule voting for senior citizens and PWDs in establishments accessible to them within seven days before the date of the elections.

Comelec will conduct nationwide registration for the senior citizens and PWDs who wanted to avail of the early voting. Those who fail to register will vote on Election Day.
