COVAX scheme only addresses ‘guilty conscience’ of wealthy nations: Roque

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Monday called the supply of the Covid-19 vaccines through the COVAX facility a “feel good” donation.

Roque said this initiative, led by the World Health Organization (WHO), only addresses the “guilty conscience” of the rich and powerful countries who have monopoly of the world’s vaccine supply.

“Ang COVAX voluntary, feel good ng mga mayayamang bansa dahil mino-monopolize nila ang suplay ng vaccine,” the Palace official said during a vaccination event held at SM City Clark, Angeles City in Pampanga.

“Dahil nga kinakailangang i-address ang guilty conscience, mamigay tayo ng konti sa mga mahihirap na bansa. Hindi po yan ang solusyon sa pandemya dahil sinasabi ng WHO na no one is safe until all of us is safe,” he added.

The Philippines has so far received a total of 15.5 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines through the COVAX facility.

As of Sunday, 46,251,087 vaccine doses had been administered nationwide.
