Nakinig sa survey at talk shows! Duterte: It is clear that people don’t want me to run, they want me to retire

So how did President Duterte reach his decision to drop his vice presidential bid and instead retire from politics?

The President admitted taking into consideration the surveys and talk shows that indicated people think a vice presidential run will be unconstitutional.

“From the sentiment that I have gathered so far sa mga surveys, sa mga talk shows, it is clear that the people do not want me to run…It is a circumvention of the Constitution. And they want me to retire,” he said in a media interview on Saturday.

“So in obedience to that will, the universal will of the Filipino people, I just announced my retirement from politics. Salamat sa inyong lahat,” he said.

Duterte made the comment in a chance interview by broadcaster Rey Langit outside the Sofitel Hotel on Saturday, October 3. He just accompanied his former aide Senator Bong Go in filing his certificate of candidacy for vice president at the Commission on Elections field office located at the hotel complex.

Duterte, in a surprise move, pulled out from the VP race and announced he would be retiring from politics. Duterte, who will step down from office next year, endorsed his former assistant to be the country’s next veep.

It was not the first time Duterte talked about leaving government service. Back in 2015, then Davao City Mayor Duterte announced his retirement from politics but decided to seek the presidency a year later.

In the same interview, Duterte confirmed his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio will run for president with Go as her running mate. But the 76-year-old leader said he has not actually talked to Mayor Sara about politics.

On Saturday afternoon, the President’s daughter filed her candidacy for another term as mayor of Davao City. She decided to seek reelection despite the mounting clamor for her presidential bid. She thanked the people for their trust and support.
