Can broadcaster Raffy Tulfo win a Senate seat in next year’s elections?

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. is optimistic about the poll chances of Tulfo in the forthcoming senatorial race due to his popularity.

Locsin commented on Tulfo’s decision to run as an independent senator, saying he has does not need any political party to back his election bid. Tulfo, a longtime broadcaster and host of top-rated news and public affairs programs, has millions of followers on social media.

“He doesn’t need anybody. He has something like 27 million devoted listeners,” Locsin tweeted on October 3, 2021.

In his first attempt to join the world of politics, Tulfo filed his certificate of candidacy for senator over the weekend. He has promised to fight for the rights of the poor and oppressed if elected senator. In championing justice for the poor, he used former President Ramon Magsaysay’s famous line “He who has less in life must have more in law.”

Tulfo, despite having no political party, is also the frontrunner in recent senatorial surveys. He is reportedly among the preferred Senate bets of President Duterte.
